Bamboo
steaming dumplings are becoming more popular as the food fad of our time. It is
the healthy, natural way to cook our favorite foods while saving lots of money
at the same time. Bamboo steaming is an ancient method that is still being used
today. In fact, it is now possible to buy a steamer that has a built-in
steaming tray. Here is how it works.
First
of all, place any variety of fresh vegetables or fruit into the steamer. You
can use a variety of fresh steaming dumplings in bamboo steamer, but be sure that they are not frozen, as
this will cause them to harden. If you are steaming baby food, use small pieces
of baby food that will not harden too much once it gets out of the steamer.
Next,
add any items that need to be cooked in water or oil to the steamer. This could
include meats, vegetables, or herbs. Once this is done, set the steamer up on
top of a trivet or other cooking surface. Set the steamer to the maximum number
of servings that the package tells you should have. (I would recommend only
serving two people at a time.)
After
this, fold one end of the sheet of thin brown paper over the filling and tie
together, creating a pocket at the bottom of the parcel. This will help the
water or oil to stay in the parcel while it steams. Next, place the parcel on a
trivet or hot grill. Bring it to room temperature before cooking.
If
the steamer is designed for bamboo, this process is even easier. Just lay the
bamboo mat on the surface of the steamer, which will help keep the moisture in.
Place your steamer over medium heat and cover the lid to steam. When the
steamer is ready, simply open and flip.
Bamboo
steaming is not something I would do every day. It does take some time to do,
but it's definitely worth it when you see the lovely dim sum look and taste.
The dumplings come out light and fluffy, and you have a light aroma of the
bamboo during the cooking process. As with all things, though, there are some
steps to steaming dumplings that need to be taken in order for them to come out
as light and fluffy as possible. If you're not comfortable doing them yourself,
you might want to consider getting a few tips from someone who is.
